How do I find a good lawn care provider?

A few years ago, I found myself having to ask this question. I thought it would be easy. Definitely seemed pretty straightforward. But little did I know the Google-laiden monstrous quest I was about to embark on. Speaking of, que search engine. There were a lot of “Lawn Care Provider” options. And I mean a lot. Normally, I just kind of cross my fingers, check out two or three, and pick one. And that’s what I did… Oops. The first “Lawn Care Provider” I picked was a lot of things, but convenient was not one. I called the office and no one answered. I got a call back forty-five minutes later and the person I spoke with seemed to be the owner. He seemed nice enough. The whole process took about two weeks from this polite conversation to getting my lawn mowed.

First, they came out and left tracks all over my lawn and it was a little hard to look at. I had a great time talking to the guys on the crew about it, but overall, after about three times getting my lawn mowed by lawn care company 1, and receiving the same kind of result each time, I decided it was time to move on. Sorry, but I need to find a better lawn care provider in my area. So on to company number two, I guess. Right? Wrong. For company number 2, I had to fill out some long form online, then I waited 3 days before I looked for lawn care company number three. Six achingly slow days later, I got a follow up response and then it was another nine days before I got my lawn mowed. Don’t get me wrong. They did an alright job. Then I looked at my bank account and I saw they had mistakenly double charged me for the services rendered. When I called them to get this issue resolved, they said it was a contract fee for the season. I was so angry, I’m not embarrassed to say I dropped them on the spot… for a hefty cancellation fee my wife was not happy about… and somehow blamed me for. There we were. Wondering what to do. When we saw that Legacy Landscape was offering a limited time $1 first time mow. It was contract-free (I double checked) and I was needing to move on again or look at buying my own equipment.

I called in, talked to a very nice lady and she helped get me a quote for what a regular mow would cost while we were on the phone and get scheduled for my $1 trial mow in all but 15 minutes. This, alone, gave me a very good idea of what the rest of my experience was going to be like. Their guys came out the next week and left a good impression. There were some big things I noticed, which is what I know, is what to look for when choosing a lawn care provider. They told me they had to go a little bit slower because the grass had gotten a little bit over long in the weeks between providers and the last few had left my lawn in pretty bad shape, overall. So they did. They moved slowly and took their time around the edges, showing me that I really care about finding a lawn care company that is really good with details. Which, really, how do I find a lawn care company that is good with details? It’s simply by looking for a few key attributes of the company. Number one, is you want to find a lawn care provider that has really good customer service. You also want to find a lawn care provider that gets back to their customers quickly and efficiently.

Thirdly, you want to find a lawn care company that is locally owned. This is really important because when you find a locally owned small business that cuts lawns they will likely be a lot more intentional and helpful overall. On top of this, they can provide a lot more detailed attention to their clients because it’s a more direct interface between management, team, and customer. Due to the nature of this direct interfacing, it makes the overall interaction between customer and company so much better. You will almost always be able to count on them being willing to accommodate reasonable client requests. This is a huge plus, obviously and was definitely my experience with the Tulsa County-revolving company, Legacy Landscape. I was hoping to find a lawn care company located around the Broken Arrow, Owasso, Jenks, Glenpool, Tulsa Metro area and I was not disappointed. There was something really nice about dealing with the family runned business. It gave me a sense of being personally known and accounted for, not just as a customer, but as a person.

There’s a lot more to finding a good lawn care provider than just finding a mowing company that will mow your lawn for a good price. Finding an affordable lawn care company that provides good service is about finding people you can trust. Overall, I think that’s the main takeaway from my experience trying to find a lawn care company. The energy of a company’s intention towards their clients is likely going to come through in every part of the customer service experience so it’s good to trust your gut on whether or not you like dealing with the people who are going to cut your lawn. This will determine whether or not it’s a lawn care company with integrity that will take good, detailed care of your grass and other lawn care needs, or just treat you like another number as they lumber through their day, trying to get it done. Find one that makes you feel seen and heard. Listen to their approach and let them tell you what makes them different from the rest of the competition. If they’re any good, they’ll have plenty to say about it!
